- Certain buttons need to be pressed hard or won’t register at all. The membrane or microswitch layer under the faceplate has worn through from years of thumb pressure on the same digits. - Intercom rings the house phone but no voice comes through, or the call drops when someone answers. The audio transformer or the two-wire phone interface on the intercom board has failed. Texas heat is rough on these boards when they are mounted inside a metal pedestal with no ventilation. - The intercom works, but the gate open button inside the house does nothing. This is often a separate dry-contact relay on the intercom board that handles the open command from the indoor handset. What is not safe is opening the pedestal and probing the intercom wiring while the operator is live, because you may touch the high-voltage feed for the motor or the mains terminal and take a serious shock.
